1 Nowe in the fourteenth yeere of King Hezekiah, Saneherib King of Asshur came vp against al the strong cities of Iudah, and tooke them.
1 No ano catorze do reinado de Ezequias, de Judá, Senaqueribe, o rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades de Judá que eram protegidas por muralhas e as conquistou.
2 And the King of Asshur sent Rabshakeh from Lachish toward Ierusalem vnto King Hezekiah, with a great hoste, and he stood by ye conduite of the vpper poole in the path of the fullers fielde.
2 Depois, ele mandou que o comandante do seu exército fosse de Laquis a Jerusalém com uma enorme força militar para exigir que o rei Ezequias se entregasse. O comandante ocupou a estrada onde os tintureiros trabalham, perto do canal que traz água do açude de cima.
3 Then came foorth vnto him Eliakim the sonne of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chanceler, and Ioah the sonne of Asaph the recorder.
3 Três autoridades de Judá saíram para se encontrar com ele: o encarregado do palácio, Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias; o escrivão, Sebna; e o conselheiro do rei, Joá, filho de Asafe.
4 And Rabshakeh sayde vnto them, Tell you Hezekiah, I pray you, Thus sayth the great King, the King of Asshur, What confidence is this, wherein thou trustest?
4 O oficial assírio lhes disse: — Levem para Ezequias esta mensagem do grande rei, o rei da Assíria: “Em que você está baseando a sua confiança?
5 I say, Surely I haue eloquence, but counsell and strength are for the warre: on whom then doest thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
5 Será que você pensa que as palavras podem tomar o lugar da experiência militar e da força? Quem você pensa que vai ajudá-lo na sua revolta contra o rei da Assíria?
6 Loe, thou trustest in this broken staffe of reede on Egypt, whereupon if a man leane, it will goe into his hand, and pearce it: so is Pharaoh King of Egypt, vnto all that trust in him.
6 Você está confiando na ajuda do Egito, mas isso é o mesmo que usar um caniço como bengala, isto é, ele vai quebrar e furar a sua mão. Assim é Faraó, rei do Egito, para aqueles que confiam nele.
7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God. Is not that he, whose hie places and whose altars Hezekiah tooke downe, and said to Iudah and to Ierusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
7 Ou, por acaso, você vai me dizer que confia no Senhor , seu Deus? E não foram os santuários e os altares do Senhor que Ezequias destruiu quando mandou que o povo de Judá e de Jerusalém adorasse num só altar?
8 Nowe therefore giue hostages to my lorde the King of Asshur, and I wil giue thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders vpon them.
8 Eu vou fazer um trato com você em nome do rei. Eu lhe darei dois mil cavalos se você puder arranjar homens suficientes para montá-los.
9 For howe canst thou despise any captaine of the least of my lordes seruants? and put thy trust on Egypt for charets and for horsemen?
9 Você não poderia vencer nem mesmo o oficial assírio menos graduado e, no entanto, espera que os egípcios lhe mandem carros de guerra e cavalaria!
10 And am I now come vp without the Lord to this land to destroy it? The Lord sayd vnto me, Goe vp against this land and destroy it.
10 Você pensa que eu ataquei e destruí o seu país sem a ajuda de Deus, o Senhor ? Foi o próprio Deus quem me mandou atacá-lo e destruí-lo!”
11 Then sayd Eliakim and Shebna and Ioah vnto Rabshakeh, Speake, I pray thee, to thy seruants in the Aramites language, (for we vnderstand it) and talke not with vs in the Iewes tongue, in the audience of the people that are on the wall.
11 Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá disseram ao oficial: — Senhor, fale em
12 Then said Rabshakeh, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee to speake these wordes, and not to the men that sit on the wall? that they may eate their owne doung, and drinke their owne pisse with you?
12 Ele respondeu: — Vocês pensam que o rei me mandou dizer todas essas coisas somente para vocês e para o seu rei? Não! Eu estou falando também com as pessoas que estão sentadas nas muralhas e que terão de comer as suas próprias fezes e beber a sua própria urina; e vocês também vão fazer isso.
13 So Rabshakeh stood, and cryed with a loude voyce in the Iewes language, and sayd, Heare the wordes of the great King, of the King of Asshur.
13 Então o oficial ficou de pé e gritou em hebraico: — Escutem o que o grande rei, o rei da Assíria, está dizendo a vocês!
14 Thus saith the King, Let not Hezekiah deceiue you: for he shall not be able to deliuer you.
14 Ele mandou avisar que não deixem que Ezequias os engane, pois ele não poderá salvá-los.
15 Neither let Hezekiah make you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliuer vs: this citie shall not be giuen ouer into the hand of the King of Asshur.
15 E não deixem que ele os convença a confiar no Senhor . Não pensem que Deus os salvará e não deixará que o nosso exército assírio conquiste a cidade de vocês.
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus sayth the King of Asshur, Make appointment with me, and come out to me, that euery man may eate of his owne vine, and euery man of his owne fig tree, and drinke euery man the water of his owne well,
16 Não deem atenção a Ezequias. O rei manda que vocês saiam da cidade e se entreguem. Vocês terão licença para comer uvas das suas próprias parreiras e figos das suas figueiras e para beber água dos seus próprios poços,
17 Till I come and bring you to a land like your owne land, euen a land of wheate, and wine, a land of bread and vineyardes,
17 até que o rei os leve para morar num país parecido com o de vocês, onde há plantações de uvas para dar vinho e onde há trigo para fazer pão.
18 Least Hezekiah deceiue you, saying, The Lord wil deliuer vs. Hath any of the gods of the nations deliuered his land out of the hand of the King of Asshur?
18 Não deixem que Ezequias os engane, fazendo vocês pensarem que Deus vai salvá-los. Será que os deuses das outras nações as salvaram do rei da Assíria?
19 Where is the god of Hamath, and of Arpad? where is the god of Sepharuaim? or howe haue they deliuered Samaria out of mine hand?
19 Onde estão agora os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Será que eles salvaram Samaria do meu poder?
20 Who is hee among all the gods of these lands, that hath deliuered their countrey out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliuer Ierusalem out of mine hand?
20 Quando foi que os deuses de todos esses países os salvaram do nosso rei? O que é, então, que faz vocês pensarem que o Senhor pode salvar Jerusalém do poder dele?
21 Then they kept silence, and answered him not a worde: for the Kings commandement was, saying, Answere him not.
21 Mas o povo ficou calado, como o rei Ezequias havia mandado; eles não disseram nem uma só palavra.
22 Then came Eliakim the sonne of Hilkiah the steward of the house, and Shebna the chanceller, and Ioah the sonne of Asaph the recorder, vnto Hezekiah with rent clothes, and tolde him the wordes of Rabshakeh.
22 Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá rasgaram as suas roupas em sinal de tristeza e foram contar ao rei aquilo que o oficial assírio tinha dito.
