1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt (euery man and his housholde came thither with Iaakob)
1 São estes os nomes dos filhos de Jacó que foram com ele para o Egito, cada um com a sua família:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Leui, and Iudah,
2 Rúben, Simeão, Levi, Judá,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Beniamin,
3 Issacar, Zebulom, Benjamim,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
4 Dã, Naftali, Gade e Aser.
5 So al the soules, that came out of the loines of Iaakob, were seuentie soules: Ioseph was in Egypt already.
5 Os descendentes diretos de Jacó eram setenta pessoas ao todo. José, o outro filho, já estava no Egito.
6 Nowe Ioseph died and all his brethren, and that whole generation.
6 Mais tarde José e todos os seus irmãos morreram, e também todos os outros daquela geração .
7 And the children of Israel brought foorth fruite and encreased in aboundance, and were multiplied, and were exceeding mightie, so that the land was full of them.
7 Mas os descendentes de Jacó, os israelitas, tiveram muitos filhos e aumentaram tanto, que se tornaram poderosos. E eles se espalharam por todo o Egito.
8 Then there rose vp a newe King in Egypt, who knewe not Ioseph.
8 Depois o Egito teve um novo rei que não sabia nada a respeito de José.
9 And he sayde vnto his people, Beholde, the people of the children of Israel are greater and mightier then we.
9 Ele disse ao seu povo: — Vejam! O povo de Israel é forte e está aumentando mais depressa do que nós.
10 Come, let vs worke wisely with them, least they multiplie, and it come to passe, that if there be warre, they ioyne them selues also vnto our enemies, and fight against vs, and get them out of the land.
10 Em caso de guerra, eles poderiam se unir com os nossos inimigos, lutariam contra nós e sairiam do país. Precisamos achar um jeito de não deixar que eles se tornem ainda mais numerosos.
11 Therefore did they set taskemasters ouer them, to keepe the vnder with burdens: and they built the cities Pithom and Raamses for the treasures of Pharaoh.
11 Por isso os egípcios puseram feitores para maltratar os israelitas com trabalhos pesados. E assim os israelitas construíram as cidades de Pitom e Ramessés, onde o rei do Egito guardava as colheitas de cereais.
12 But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grewe: therefore they were more grieued against the children of Israel.
12 Porém quanto mais os egípcios maltratavam os israelitas, tanto mais eles aumentavam. Os egípcios ficaram com medo deles
13 Wherefore the Egyptians by crueltie caused the children of Israel to serue.
13 e os tornaram escravos, tratando-os com brutalidade.
14 Thus they made them weary of their liues by sore labour in clay and in bricke, and in al worke in the fielde, with all maner of bondage, which they layde vpon them most cruelly.
14 Fizeram com que a vida deles se tornasse amarga, obrigando-os a fazer trabalhos pesados na fabricação de tijolos, nas construções e nas plantações. Em todos os serviços que os israelitas faziam, eles eram tratados com crueldade.
15 Moreouer the King of Egypt commanded ye midwiues of the Ebrewe women, (of which the ones name was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah)
15 O rei do Egito deu a Sifrá e a Puá, que eram parteiras das mulheres israelitas, a seguinte ordem:
16 And sayde, When ye doe the office of a midwife to the women of the Ebrewes, and see them on their stooles, if it be a sonne, then yee shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then let her liue.
16 — Quando vocês forem ajudar as mulheres israelitas nos seus partos, façam o seguinte: se nascer um menino, matem; mas, se nascer uma menina, deixem que viva.
17 Notwithstanding ye midwiues feared God, and did not as the King of Egypt commanded them, but preserued aliue the men children.
17 Porém as parteiras temiam a Deus e não fizeram o que o rei do Egito havia mandado. Pelo contrário, deixaram que os meninos vivessem.
18 Then the King of Egypt called for the midwiues, and sayde vnto them, Why haue yee done thus, and haue preserued aliue the men children?
18 Então o rei mandou chamar as parteiras e perguntou: — Por que vocês estão fazendo isso? Por que estão deixando que os meninos vivam?
19 And the midwiues answered Pharaoh, Because the Ebrewe women are not as the women of Egypt: for they are liuely, and are deliuered yer the midwife come at them.
19 Elas responderam: — É que as mulheres israelitas não são como as egípcias. Elas dão à luz com facilidade, e as crianças nascem antes que a parteira chegue. E o povo de Israel aumentou e se tornou muito forte.
20 God therefore prospered the midwiues, and the people multiplied and were very mightie.

21 And because ye midwiues feared God, therefore he made them houses.
21 — ausente —
22 Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Euery man childe that is borne, cast yee into the riuer, but reserue euery maide childe aliue.
22 Então o rei deu a seguinte ordem a todo o seu povo: — Joguem no rio Nilo todos os meninos israelitas que nascerem, mas deixem que todas as meninas vivam.
