1 Thus hath the Lord God shewed vnto me, and behold, a basket of summer fruite.
1 O Senhor Deus me mostrou numa visão o seguinte: estava ali uma cesta cheia de frutas maduras.
2 And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I sayd, A basket of sommer fruite. Then sayd the Lord vnto me, The ende is come vpon my people of Israel, I wil passe by them no more.
2 Ele me perguntou: — Amós, o que é que você está vendo? — Uma cesta cheia de frutas maduras! — respondi. Então ele me disse: — Chegou o fim para o povo de Israel, que está maduro, pronto para ser arrancado como uma fruta madura. Nunca mais vou mudar de ideia e perdoá-los.
3 And the songs of the Temple shalbe howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: many dead bodies shalbe in euery place: they shall cast them forth with silence.
3 Naquele dia, em vez de canções haverá lamentações no palácio. Haverá tantos mortos, que os corpos serão jogados em qualquer lugar. Silêncio! Eu, o Senhor , estou falando.
4 Heare this, O yee that swallowe vp the poore, that ye may make the needie of the lande to fayle,
4 Escutem, vocês que maltratam os necessitados e exploram os humildes aqui neste país.
5 Saying, When will the newe moneth bee gone, that we may sell corne? and the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheate, and make the Ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifie the weights by deceit?
5 Vocês dizem: “Quem dera que a Festa da Lua Nova já tivesse terminado para que pudéssemos voltar a vender os cereais! Como seria bom se o sábado já tivesse passado! Aí começaríamos a vender trigo de novo, cobrando preços bem altos, usando pesos e medidas falsos
6 That we may buy the poore for siluer, and the needie for shooes: yea, and sell the refuse of the wheate.
6 e vendendo trigo que não presta. Os pobres não terão dinheiro para pagar as suas dívidas, nem mesmo os que tomaram dinheiro emprestado para comprar um par de sandálias. Assim eles se venderão a nós e serão nossos escravos!”
7 The Lord hath sworne by the excellencie of Iaakob, Surely I will neuer forget any of their workes.
7 Portanto, o Senhor , o Deus a quem o povo de Israel louva, faz este juramento: — Nunca esquecerei aquilo que o meu povo tem feito.
8 Shall not the lande tremble for this, and euery one mourne, that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise vp wholy as a flood, and it shall bee cast out, and drowned as by the flood of Egypt.
8 Por causa disso, a terra tremerá, e todos os seus moradores chorarão de tristeza. A terra subirá e baixará como as águas do rio Nilo.
9 And in that day, saith the Lord God, I will euen cause the sunne to go downe at noone: and I will darken the earth in the cleare day.
9 Naquele dia, farei o sol se pôr ao meio-dia, e em pleno dia a terra ficará coberta de escuridão. Sou eu, o Senhor , quem está falando.
10 And I will turne your feastes into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring sackcloth vpon all loynes, and baldnes vpon euery head: and I will make it as the mourning of an onely sonne, and the ende thereof as a bitter day.
10 Transformarei as suas festas em velórios; vocês vão chorar em vez de cantar. Em sinal de luto, vocês vestirão roupa feita de pano grosseiro e raparão a cabeça. Vocês serão como pais chorando a morte do filho único. E tudo terminará em amargura.
11 Beholde, the dayes come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the lande, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord.
11 — Está chegando o dia em que mandarei fome pelo país inteiro. Todos ficarão com fome, mas não por falta de comida, e com sede, mas não por falta de água. Todos terão fome e sede de ouvir a mensagem de Deus, o Senhor .
12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the North euen vnto the East shall they run to and from to seeke the worde of the Lord, and shall not finde it.
12 Correrão do mar Morto até o mar Mediterrâneo, irão pelas regiões do Norte e do Leste do país, procurando a mensagem de Deus, o Senhor , mas não a encontrarão.
13 In that day shall the faire virgines and the yong men perish for thirst.
13 Naquele dia, até moços e moças fortes desmaiarão de sede.
14 They that sweare by the sinne of Samaria, and that say, Thy God, O Dan, liueth, and the maner of Beer-sheba liueth, euen they shall fall, and neuer rise vp againe.
14 Os que juram pelos ídolos de Samaria, os que dizem: “Eu juro pelo deus de Dã” ou: “Eu juro pelo deus de Berseba” — todos eles cairão e nunca mais se levantarão. Eu, o Senhor , estou falando.
