1 E souberam disso todos os reis que viviam a oeste do Jordão, nas montanhas, na Sefelá e em todo o litoral do mar Grande até o Líbano. Eram os reis dos hititas, dos amorreus, dos cananeus, dos ferezeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus.

3 Contudo, quando os habitantes de Gibeom souberam o que Josué tinha feito com Jericó e Ai,

5 Os homens calçavam sandálias gastas e remendadas e vestiam roupas velhas. Todos os pães do suprimento deles estavam secos e esmigalhados.

6 Foram a Josué, ao acampamento de Gilgal, e disseram a ele e aos homens de Israel: "Viemos de uma terra distante. Queremos que façam um acordo conosco".

7 Os israelitas disseram aos heveus: "Talvez vocês vivam perto de nós. Como poderemos fazer um acordo com vocês? "

8 "Somos seus servos", disseram a Josué. Josué, porém, perguntou: "Quem são vocês? De onde vocês vêm? "

10 e de tudo o que fez aos dois reis dos amorreus a leste do Jordão: Seom, rei de Hesbom, e Ogue, rei de Basã, que reinava em Asterote.

11 E os nossos líderes e todos os habitantes de nossa terra nos disseram: ‘Juntem provisões para a viagem, vão encontrar-se com eles e digam-lhes: Somos seus servos, façam um acordo conosco’.

12 Este nosso pão estava quente quando o embrulhamos em casa no dia em que saímos de viagem para cá. Mas vejam como agora está seco e esmigalhado.

13 Estas vasilhas de couro que enchemos de vinho eram novas, mas agora estão rachadas. E as nossas roupas e sandálias estão gastas por causa da longa viagem".

14 Os israelitas examinaram as provisões dos heveus, mas não consultaram o Senhor.
15 And|strong="H3091" Joshua|strong="H3091" made|strong="H6213" peace|strong="H7965" with|strong="H1285" them|strong="H6213", and|strong="H3091" made|strong="H6213" a|strong="H3068" covenant|strong="H1285" with|strong="H1285" them|strong="H6213", to|strong="H6213" let them|strong="H6213" live|strong="H2421": and|strong="H3091" the|strong="H6213" princes|strong="H5387" of|strong="H5712" the|strong="H6213" congregation|strong="H5712" sware|strong="H7650" unto|strong="H6213" them|strong="H6213".
15 Então Josué fez um acordo de paz com eles, garantindo poupar-lhes a vida, e os líderes da comunidade o ratificaram com juramento.

16 Três dias depois de fazerem o acordo com os gibeonitas, os israelitas souberam que eram vizinhos e que viviam perto deles.
17 And|strong="H1121" the|strong="H3117" children|strong="H1121" of|strong="H1121" Israel|strong="H3478" journeyed|strong="H5265", and|strong="H1121" came|strong="H3478" unto|strong="H3478" their|strong="H3117" cities|strong="H5892" on|strong="H3117" the|strong="H3117" third|strong="H7992" day|strong="H3117". Now|strong="H3117" their|strong="H3117" cities|strong="H5892" were|strong="H3478" Gibeon|strong="H1391", and|strong="H1121" Chephirah|strong="H3716", and|strong="H1121" Beeroth, and|strong="H1121" Kiriath-jearim|strong="H7157".
17 Por isso partiram de viagem, e três dias depois chegaram às cidades dos heveus, que eram Gibeom, Quefira, Beerote e Quiriate-Jearim.
18 And|strong="H1121" the|strong="H3605" children|strong="H1121" of|strong="H1121" Israel|strong="H3478" smote|strong="H5221" them|strong="H5921" not|strong="H3808", because|strong="H3588" the|strong="H3605" princes|strong="H5387" of|strong="H1121" the|strong="H3605" congregation|strong="H5712" had|strong="H3068" sworn|strong="H7650" unto|strong="H3068" them|strong="H5921" by|strong="H5921" Jehovah|strong="H3068", the|strong="H3605" God|strong="H3068" of|strong="H1121" Israel|strong="H3478". And|strong="H1121" all|strong="H3605" the|strong="H3605" congregation|strong="H5712" murmured|strong="H3885" against|strong="H5921" the|strong="H3605" princes|strong="H5387".
18 Mas não os atacaram, porque os líderes da comunidade lhes haviam feito um juramento em nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Toda a comunidade, porém, queixou-se contra os líderes,
19 But|strong="H3808" all|strong="H3605" the|strong="H3605" princes|strong="H5387" said unto|strong="H3068" all|strong="H3605" the|strong="H3605" congregation|strong="H5712", We|strong="H6258" have|strong="H3068" sworn|strong="H7650" unto|strong="H3068" them|strong="H5060" by|strong="H7650" Jehovah|strong="H3068", the|strong="H3605" God|strong="H3068" of|strong="H3068" Israel|strong="H3478": now|strong="H6258" therefore|strong="H6258" we|strong="H3068" may|strong="H3201" not|strong="H3808" touch|strong="H5060" them|strong="H5060".
19 que lhes responderam: "Fizemos a eles o nosso juramento em nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel; por isso não podemos tocar neles.
20 This|strong="H2063" we|strong="H3068" will|strong="H1961" do|strong="H6213" to|strong="H1961" them|strong="H5921", and|strong="H6213" let|strong="H3808" them|strong="H5921" live|strong="H2421"; lest wrath|strong="H7110" be|strong="H1961" upon|strong="H5921" us|strong="H5921", because|strong="H5921" of|strong="H5921" the|strong="H5921" oath|strong="H7621" which we|strong="H3068" sware|strong="H7650" unto|strong="H6213" them|strong="H5921".
20 Todavia, nós os trataremos assim: Vamos deixá-los viver, para que não caia sobre nós a ira divina por quebrarmos o juramento que lhes fizemos".
21 And|strong="H6086" the|strong="H3605" princes|strong="H5387" said|strong="H1696" unto|strong="H1696" them|strong="H1961", Let|strong="H1961" them|strong="H1961" live|strong="H2421": so|strong="H1961" they|strong="H3605" became|strong="H1961" hewers|strong="H2404" of|strong="H4325" wood|strong="H6086" and|strong="H6086" drawers|strong="H7579" of|strong="H4325" water|strong="H4325" unto|strong="H1696" all|strong="H3605" the|strong="H3605" congregation|strong="H5712", as|strong="H1961" the|strong="H3605" princes|strong="H5387" had|strong="H1961" spoken|strong="H1696" unto|strong="H1696" them|strong="H1961".
21 E acrescentaram: "Eles ficarão vivos, mas serão lenhadores e carregadores de água para toda a comunidade". E assim se manteve a promessa dos líderes.
22 And|strong="H3091" Joshua|strong="H3091" called|strong="H7121" for|strong="H7121" them|strong="H7121", and|strong="H3091" he|strong="H4480" spake|strong="H1696" unto|strong="H1696" them|strong="H7121", saying|strong="H1696", Wherefore|strong="H4100" have|strong="H1696" ye|strong="H1696" beguiled|strong="H7411" us|strong="H4480", saying|strong="H1696", We|strong="H7130" are|strong="H4100" very|strong="H3966" far|strong="H7350" from|strong="H4480" you|strong="H4480"; when|strong="H1696" ye|strong="H1696" dwell|strong="H3427" among|strong="H7130" us|strong="H4480"?
22 Então Josué convocou os gibeonitas e disse: "Por que vocês nos enganaram dizendo que viviam muito longe de nós, quando na verdade vivem perto?
23 Now|strong="H6258" therefore|strong="H6258" ye|strong="H3808" are|strong="H5650" cursed, and|strong="H1004" there|strong="H4480" shall|strong="H1004" never|strong="H3808" fail|strong="H3772" to|strong="H1004" be|strong="H3808" of|strong="H1004" you|strong="H3808" bondmen|strong="H5650", both|strong="H4480" hewers|strong="H2404" of|strong="H1004" wood|strong="H6086" and|strong="H1004" drawers|strong="H7579" of|strong="H1004" water|strong="H4325" for|strong="H1004" the|strong="H4480" house|strong="H1004" of|strong="H1004" my|strong="H4480" God|strong="H3808".
23 Agora vocês estão debaixo de maldição: Nunca deixarão de ser escravos, rachando lenha e carregando água para a casa do meu Deus".
24 And|strong="H4872" they|strong="H3588" answered|strong="H6030" Joshua|strong="H3091", and|strong="H4872" said|strong="H1697", Because|strong="H3588" it|strong="H5414" was|strong="H3068" certainly|strong="H3588" told|strong="H5046" thy|strong="H3068" servants|strong="H5650", how|strong="H3588" that|strong="H3588" Jehovah|strong="H3068" thy|strong="H3068" God|strong="H3068" commanded|strong="H6680" his|strong="H3605" servant|strong="H5650" Moses|strong="H4872" to|strong="H3068" give|strong="H5414" you|strong="H3588" all|strong="H3605" the|strong="H3605" land|strong="H6440", and|strong="H4872" to|strong="H3068" destroy|strong="H8045" all|strong="H3605" the|strong="H3605" inhabitants|strong="H3427" of|strong="H3068" the|strong="H3605" land|strong="H6440" from|strong="H6440" before|strong="H6440" you|strong="H3588"; therefore|strong="H4872" we|strong="H3068" were|strong="H1697" sore|strong="H3966" afraid|strong="H3372" for|strong="H3588" our|strong="H3068" lives|strong="H5315" because|strong="H3588" of|strong="H3068" you|strong="H3588", and|strong="H4872" have|strong="H3068" done|strong="H6213" this|strong="H2088" thing|strong="H1697".
24 Eles responderam a Josué: "Os seus servos ficaram sabendo como o Senhor, o seu Deus, ordenou que o seu servo Moisés lhes desse toda esta terra e que destruísse todos os seus habitantes da presença de vocês. Tivemos medo do que poderia acontecer conosco por causa de vocês. Por isso agimos assim.
25 And|strong="H3027" now|strong="H6258", behold|strong="H2005", we|strong="H3068" are|strong="H5869" in|strong="H6213" thy|strong="H6213" hand|strong="H3027": as|strong="H6213" it|strong="H6213" seemeth|strong="H5869" good|strong="H2896" and|strong="H3027" right|strong="H3477" unto|strong="H6213" thee|strong="H6213" to|strong="H6213" do|strong="H6213" unto|strong="H6213" us|strong="H6213", do|strong="H6213".
25 Estamos agora nas suas mãos. Faça conosco o que lhe parecer bom e justo".
26 And|strong="H1121" so|strong="H3651" did|strong="H6213" he|strong="H3651" unto|strong="H6213" them|strong="H3027", and|strong="H1121" delivered|strong="H5337" them|strong="H3027" out|strong="H6213" of|strong="H1121" the|strong="H6213" hand|strong="H3027" of|strong="H1121" the|strong="H6213" children|strong="H1121" of|strong="H1121" Israel|strong="H3478", that|strong="H3651" they|strong="H3651" slew|strong="H2026" them|strong="H3027" not|strong="H3808".
26 Josué então os protegeu e não permitiu que os matassem.

27 Mas naquele dia fez dos gibeonitas lenhadores e carregadores de água para a comunidade e para o altar do Senhor, no local que o Senhor escolhesse. É o que eles são até hoje.
