1 And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559" unto Joshua|strong="H3091", Fear|strong="H3372" not, neither be thou dismayed|strong="H2865": take|strong="H3947" all the people|strong="H5971" of war|strong="H4421" with thee, and arise|strong="H6965", go up|strong="H5927" to Ai|strong="H5857": see|strong="H7200", I have given|strong="H5414" into thy hand|strong="H3027" the king|strong="H4428" of Ai|strong="H5857", and his people|strong="H5971", and his city|strong="H5892", and his land|strong="H0776":
2 And thou shalt do|strong="H6213" to Ai|strong="H5857" and her king|strong="H4428" as thou didst|strong="H6213" unto Jericho|strong="H3405" and her king|strong="H4428": only the spoil|strong="H7998" thereof, and the cattle|strong="H0929" thereof, shall ye take for a prey|strong="H0962" unto yourselves: lay|strong="H7760" thee an ambush|strong="H0693" for the city|strong="H5892" behind|strong="H0310" it.
3 So Joshua|strong="H3091" arose|strong="H6965", and all the people|strong="H5971" of war|strong="H4421", to go up|strong="H5927" against Ai|strong="H5857": and Joshua|strong="H3091" chose out|strong="H0977" thirty|strong="H7970" thousand|strong="H0505" mighty|strong="H1368" men|strong="H0376" of valour|strong="H2428", and sent them away|strong="H7971" by night|strong="H3915".
4 And he commanded|strong="H6680" them, saying|strong="H0559", Behold|strong="H7200", ye shall lie in wait|strong="H0693" against the city|strong="H5892", even behind|strong="H0310" the city|strong="H5892": go|strong="H7368" not very|strong="H3966" far|strong="H7368" from the city|strong="H5892", but be ye all ready|strong="H3559":
5 And I, and all the people|strong="H5971" that are with me, will approach|strong="H7126" unto the city|strong="H5892": and it shall come to pass, when they come out|strong="H3318" against|strong="H7125" us, as at the first|strong="H7223", that we will flee|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" them,
6 (For they will come out|strong="H3318" after|strong="H0310" us) till we have drawn|strong="H5423" them from the city|strong="H5892"; for they will say|strong="H0559", They flee|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" us, as at the first|strong="H7223": therefore we will flee|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" them.
7 Then ye shall rise up|strong="H6965" from the ambush|strong="H0693", and seize|strong="H3423" upon the city|strong="H5892": for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* your God|strong="H0430" will deliver|strong="H5414" it into your hand|strong="H3027".
8 And it shall be, when ye have taken|strong="H8610" the city|strong="H5892", that ye shall set|strong="H3341" the city|strong="H5892" on fire|strong="H0784": according to the commandment|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall ye do|strong="H6213". See|strong="H7200", I have commanded|strong="H6680" you.
9 Joshua|strong="H3091" therefore sent them forth|strong="H7971": and they went|strong="H3212" to lie in ambush|strong="H3993", and abode|strong="H3427" between Beth-el|strong="H1008" and Ai|strong="H5857", on the west side|strong="H3220" of Ai|strong="H5857": but Joshua|strong="H3091" lodged|strong="H3885" that night|strong="H3915" among|strong="H8432" the people|strong="H5971".
10 And Joshua|strong="H3091" rose up early|strong="H7925" in the morning|strong="H1242", and numbered|strong="H6485" the people|strong="H5971", and went up|strong="H5927", he and the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel|strong="H3478", before|strong="H6440" the people|strong="H5971" to Ai|strong="H5857".
11 And all the people|strong="H5971", even the people of war|strong="H4421" that were with him, went up|strong="H5927", and drew nigh|strong="H5066", and came|strong="H0935" before the city|strong="H5892", and pitched|strong="H2583" on the north side|strong="H6828" of Ai|strong="H5857": now there was a valley|strong="H1516" between them and Ai|strong="H5857".
12 And he took|strong="H3947" about five|strong="H2568" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376", and set|strong="H7760" them to lie in ambush|strong="H0693" between Beth-el|strong="H1008" and Ai|strong="H5857", on the west side|strong="H3220" of the city|strong="H5857".
13 And when they had set|strong="H7760" the people|strong="H5971", even all the host|strong="H4264" that was on the north|strong="H6828" of the city|strong="H5892", and their liers in wait|strong="H6119" on the west|strong="H3220" of the city|strong="H5892", Joshua|strong="H3091" went|strong="H3212" that night|strong="H3915" into the midst|strong="H8432" of the valley|strong="H6010".
14 And it came to pass, when the king|strong="H4428" of Ai|strong="H5857" saw|strong="H7200" it, that they hasted|strong="H4116" and rose up early|strong="H7925", and the men|strong="H0582" of the city|strong="H5892" went out|strong="H3318" against|strong="H7125" Israel|strong="H3478" to battle|strong="H4421", he and all his people|strong="H5971", at a time appointed|strong="H4150", before|strong="H6440" the plain|strong="H6160"; but he wist|strong="H3045" not that there were liers in ambush|strong="H0693" against him behind|strong="H0310" the city|strong="H5892".
15 And Joshua|strong="H3091" and all Israel|strong="H3478" made as if they were beaten|strong="H5060" before|strong="H6440" them, and fled|strong="H5127" by the way|strong="H1870" of the wilderness|strong="H4057".
16 And all the people|strong="H5971" that were in Ai|strong="H5857" were called|strong="H2199" together to pursue|strong="H7291" after|strong="H0310" them: and they pursued|strong="H7291" after|strong="H0310" Joshua|strong="H3091", and were drawn away|strong="H5423" from the city|strong="H5892".
17 And there was not a man|strong="H0376" left|strong="H7604" in Ai|strong="H5857" or Beth-el|strong="H1008", that went not out|strong="H3318" after|strong="H0310" Israel|strong="H3478": and they left|strong="H5800" the city|strong="H5892" open|strong="H6605", and pursued|strong="H7291" after Israel|strong="H3478".
18 And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559" unto Joshua|strong="H3091", Stretch out|strong="H5186" the spear|strong="H3591" that is in thy hand|strong="H3027" toward Ai|strong="H5857"; for I will give|strong="H5414" it into thine hand|strong="H3027". And Joshua|strong="H3091" stretched out|strong="H5186" the spear|strong="H3591" that he had in his hand|strong="H3027" toward the city|strong="H5892".
19 And the ambush|strong="H0693" arose|strong="H6965" quickly|strong="H4120" out of their place|strong="H4725", and they ran|strong="H7323" as soon as he had stretched out|strong="H5186" his hand|strong="H3027": and they entered|strong="H0935" into the city|strong="H5892", and took|strong="H3920" it, and hasted|strong="H4116" and set|strong="H3341" the city|strong="H5892" on fire|strong="H0784".
20 And when the men|strong="H0582" of Ai|strong="H5857" looked|strong="H6437" behind|strong="H0310" them, they saw|strong="H7200", and, behold, the smoke|strong="H6227" of the city|strong="H5892" ascended up|strong="H5927" to heaven|strong="H8064", and they had no power|strong="H3027" to flee|strong="H5127" this way or that way|strong="H2008": and the people|strong="H5971" that fled|strong="H5127" to the wilderness|strong="H4057" turned back|strong="H2015" upon the pursuers|strong="H7291".
21 And when Joshua|strong="H3091" and all Israel|strong="H3478" saw|strong="H7200" that the ambush|strong="H0693" had taken|strong="H3920" the city|strong="H5892", and that the smoke|strong="H6227" of the city|strong="H5892" ascended|strong="H5927", then they turned again|strong="H7725", and slew|strong="H5221" the men|strong="H0582" of Ai|strong="H5857".
22 And the other|strong="H0428" issued out|strong="H3318" of the city|strong="H5892" against|strong="H7125" them; so they were in the midst|strong="H8432" of Israel|strong="H3478", some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote|strong="H5221" them, so that|strong="H5704" they let|strong="H7604" none of them remain|strong="H8300" or escape|strong="H6412".
23 And the king|strong="H4428" of Ai|strong="H5857" they took|strong="H8610" alive|strong="H2416", and brought|strong="H7126" him to Joshua|strong="H3091".
24 And it came to pass, when Israel|strong="H3478" had made an end|strong="H3615" of slaying|strong="H2026" all the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of Ai|strong="H5857" in the field|strong="H7704", in the wilderness|strong="H4057" wherein they chased|strong="H7291" them, and when they were all fallen|strong="H5307" on the edge|strong="H6310" of the sword|strong="H2719", until they were consumed|strong="H8552", that all the Israelites|strong="H3478" returned|strong="H7725" unto Ai|strong="H5857", and smote|strong="H5221" it with the edge|strong="H6310" of the sword|strong="H2719".
25 And so it was, that all that fell|strong="H5307" that day|strong="H3117", both of men|strong="H0376" and women|strong="H0802", were twelve|strong="H8147" thousand|strong="H0505", even all the men|strong="H0582" of Ai|strong="H5857".
26 For Joshua|strong="H3091" drew|strong="H7725" not his hand|strong="H3027" back|strong="H7725", wherewith he stretched out|strong="H5186" the spear|strong="H3591", until he had utterly destroyed|strong="H2763" all the inhabitants|strong="H3427" of Ai|strong="H5857".
27 Only the cattle|strong="H0929" and the spoil|strong="H7998" of that city|strong="H5892" Israel|strong="H3478" took for a prey|strong="H0962" unto themselves, according unto the word|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* which he commanded|strong="H6680" Joshua|strong="H3091".
28 And Joshua|strong="H3091" burnt|strong="H8313" Ai|strong="H5857", and made|strong="H7760" it an heap|strong="H8510" for ever|strong="H5769", even a desolation|strong="H8077" unto this day|strong="H3117".
29 And the king|strong="H4428" of Ai|strong="H5857" he hanged|strong="H8518" on a tree|strong="H6086" until eventide|strong="H6256": and as soon as the sun|strong="H8121" was down|strong="H0935", Joshua|strong="H3091" commanded|strong="H6680" that they should take|strong="H3381" his carcase|strong="H5038" down|strong="H3381" from the tree|strong="H6086", and cast|strong="H7993" it at the entering|strong="H6607" of the gate|strong="H8179" of the city|strong="H5892", and raise|strong="H6965" thereon a great|strong="H1419" heap|strong="H1530" of stones|strong="H0068", that remaineth unto this day|strong="H3117".
30 Then Joshua|strong="H3091" built|strong="H1129" an altar|strong="H4196" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478" in mount|strong="H2022" Ebal|strong="H5858",
31 As Moses|strong="H4872" the servant|strong="H5650" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* commanded|strong="H6680" the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", as it is written|strong="H3789" in the book|strong="H5612" of the law|strong="H8451" of Moses|strong="H4872", an altar|strong="H4196" of whole|strong="H8003" stones|strong="H0068", over which no man hath lift up|strong="H5130" any iron|strong="H1270": and they offered|strong="H5927" thereon burnt offerings|strong="H5930" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and sacrificed|strong="H2076" peace offerings|strong="H8002".
32 And he wrote|strong="H3789" there upon the stones|strong="H0068" a copy|strong="H4932" of the law|strong="H8451" of Moses|strong="H4872", which he wrote|strong="H3789" in the presence|strong="H6440" of the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478".
33 And all Israel|strong="H3478", and their elders|strong="H2205", and officers|strong="H7860", and their judges|strong="H8199", stood|strong="H5975" on this side the ark|strong="H0727" and on that side before the priests|strong="H3548" the Levites|strong="H3881", which bare|strong="H5375" the ark|strong="H0727" of the covenant|strong="H1285" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, as well the stranger|strong="H1616", as he that was born|strong="H0249" among them; half|strong="H2677" of them over|strong="H0413" against|strong="H4136" mount|strong="H2022" Gerizim|strong="H1630", and half|strong="H2677" of them over against|strong="H4136" mount|strong="H2022" Ebal|strong="H5858"; as Moses|strong="H4872" the servant|strong="H5650" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* had commanded|strong="H6680" before|strong="H7223", that they should bless|strong="H1288" the people|strong="H5971" of Israel|strong="H3478".
34 And afterward|strong="H0310" he read|strong="H7121" all the words|strong="H1697" of the law|strong="H8451", the blessings|strong="H1293" and cursings|strong="H7045", according to all that is written|strong="H3789" in the book|strong="H5612" of the law|strong="H8451".
35 There was not a word|strong="H1697" of all that Moses|strong="H4872" commanded|strong="H6680", which Joshua|strong="H3091" read|strong="H7121" not before all the congregation|strong="H6951" of Israel|strong="H3478", with the women|strong="H0802", and the little ones|strong="H2945", and the strangers|strong="H1616" that were conversant|strong="H1980" among|strong="H7130" them.
