1 Moreover Ahithophel|strong="H0302" said|strong="H0559" unto Absalom|strong="H0053", Let me now choose out|strong="H0977" twelve|strong="H8147" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376", and I will arise|strong="H6965" and pursue|strong="H7291" after|strong="H0310" David|strong="H1732" this night|strong="H3915":
2 And I will come|strong="H0935" upon him while he is weary|strong="H3023" and weak|strong="H7504" handed|strong="H3027", and will make him afraid|strong="H2729": and all the people|strong="H5971" that are with him shall flee|strong="H5127"; and I will smite|strong="H5221" the king|strong="H4428" only:
3 And I will bring back|strong="H7725" all the people|strong="H5971" unto thee: the man|strong="H0376" whom thou seekest|strong="H1245" is as if all returned|strong="H7725": so all the people|strong="H5971" shall be in peace|strong="H7965".
4 And the saying|strong="H1697" pleased|strong="H3474" Absalom|strong="H0053" well|strong="H5869", and all the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel|strong="H3478".
5 Then said|strong="H0559" Absalom|strong="H0053", Call|strong="H7121" now Hushai|strong="H2365" the Archite|strong="H0757" also, and let us hear|strong="H8085" likewise what he saith|strong="H6310".
6 And when Hushai|strong="H2365" was come|strong="H0935" to Absalom|strong="H0053", Absalom|strong="H0053" spake|strong="H0559" unto him, saying|strong="H0559", Ahithophel|strong="H0302" hath spoken|strong="H1696" after this manner|strong="H1697": shall we do|strong="H6213" after his saying|strong="H1697"? if not; speak|strong="H1696" thou.
7 And Hushai|strong="H2365" said|strong="H0559" unto Absalom|strong="H0053", The counsel|strong="H6098" that Ahithophel|strong="H0302" hath given|strong="H3289" is not good|strong="H2896" at this time|strong="H6471".
8 For, said|strong="H0559" Hushai|strong="H2365", thou knowest|strong="H3045" thy father|strong="H0001" and his men|strong="H0582", that they be mighty men|strong="H1368", and they be chafed|strong="H4751" in their minds|strong="H5315", as a bear|strong="H1677" robbed|strong="H7909" of her whelps in the field|strong="H7704": and thy father|strong="H0001" is a man|strong="H0376" of war|strong="H4421", and will not lodge|strong="H3885" with the people|strong="H5971".
9 Behold, he is hid|strong="H2244" now in some|strong="H0259" pit|strong="H6354", or in some|strong="H0259" other place|strong="H4725": and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown|strong="H5307" at the first|strong="H8462", that whosoever|strong="H8085" heareth|strong="H8085" it will say|strong="H0559", There is a slaughter|strong="H4046" among the people|strong="H5971" that follow|strong="H0310" Absalom|strong="H0053".
10 And he also that is valiant|strong="H1121", whose heart|strong="H3820" is as the heart|strong="H3820" of a lion|strong="H0738", shall utterly|strong="H4549" melt|strong="H4549": for all Israel|strong="H3478" knoweth|strong="H3045" that thy father|strong="H0001" is a mighty man|strong="H1368", and they which be with him are valiant|strong="H2428" men|strong="H1121".
11 Therefore I counsel|strong="H3289" that all Israel|strong="H3478" be generally|strong="H0622" gathered|strong="H0622" unto thee, from Dan|strong="H1835" even to Beer-sheba|strong="H0884", as the sand|strong="H2344" that is by the sea|strong="H3220" for multitude|strong="H7230"; and that thou go|strong="H1980" to battle|strong="H7128" in thine own person|strong="H6440".
12 So shall we come|strong="H0935" upon him in some|strong="H0259" place|strong="H4725" where he shall be found|strong="H4672", and we will light|strong="H5168" upon him as the dew|strong="H2919" falleth|strong="H5307" on the ground|strong="H0127": and of him and of all the men|strong="H0582" that are with him there shall not be left|strong="H3498" so much as|strong="H1571" one|strong="H0259".
13 Moreover, if|strong="H0518" he be gotten|strong="H0622" into a city|strong="H5892", then shall all Israel|strong="H3478" bring|strong="H5375" ropes|strong="H2256" to that city|strong="H5892", and we will draw|strong="H5498" it into the river|strong="H5158", until there be not one|strong="H1571" small stone|strong="H6872" found|strong="H4672" there.
14 And Absalom|strong="H0053" and all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" said|strong="H0559", The counsel|strong="H6098" of Hushai|strong="H2365" the Archite|strong="H0757" is better|strong="H2896" than the counsel|strong="H6098" of Ahithophel|strong="H0302". For the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* had appointed|strong="H6680" to defeat|strong="H6565" the good|strong="H2896" counsel|strong="H6098" of Ahithophel|strong="H0302", to the intent|strong="H5668" that the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* might bring|strong="H0935" evil|strong="H7451" upon Absalom|strong="H0053".
15 Then said|strong="H0559" Hushai|strong="H2365" unto Zadok|strong="H6659" and to Abiathar|strong="H0054" the priests|strong="H3548", Thus and thus did Ahithophel|strong="H0302" counsel|strong="H3289" Absalom|strong="H0053" and the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel|strong="H3478"; and thus and thus have I counselled|strong="H3289".
16 Now therefore send|strong="H7971" quickly|strong="H4120", and tell|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732", saying|strong="H0559", Lodge|strong="H3885" not this night|strong="H3915" in the plains|strong="H6160" of the wilderness|strong="H4057", but speedily|strong="H5674" pass over|strong="H5674"; lest the king|strong="H4428" be swallowed up|strong="H1104", and all the people|strong="H5971" that are with him.
17 Now Jonathan|strong="H3083" and Ahimaaz|strong="H0290" stayed|strong="H5975" by En-rogel|strong="H5883"; for they might|strong="H3201" not be seen|strong="H7200" to come|strong="H0935" into the city|strong="H5892": and a wench|strong="H8198" went|strong="H1980" and told|strong="H5046" them; and they went|strong="H3212" and told|strong="H5046" king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732".
18 Nevertheless a lad|strong="H5288" saw|strong="H7200" them, and told|strong="H5046" Absalom|strong="H0053": but they went|strong="H3212" both|strong="H8147" of them away quickly|strong="H4120", and came|strong="H0935" to a man’s|strong="H0376" house|strong="H1004" in Bahurim|strong="H0980", which had a well|strong="H0875" in his court|strong="H2691"; whither|strong="H8033" they went down|strong="H3381".
19 And the woman|strong="H0802" took|strong="H3947" and spread|strong="H6566" a covering|strong="H4539" over the well’s|strong="H0875" mouth|strong="H6440", and spread|strong="H7849" ground corn|strong="H7383" thereon; and the thing|strong="H1697" was not known|strong="H3045".
20 And when Absalom’s|strong="H0053" servants|strong="H5650" came|strong="H0935" to the woman|strong="H0802" to the house|strong="H1004", they said|strong="H0559", Where is Ahimaaz|strong="H0290" and Jonathan|strong="H3083"? And the woman|strong="H0802" said|strong="H0559" unto them, They be gone over|strong="H5674" the brook|strong="H4323" of water|strong="H4325". And when they had sought|strong="H1245" and could not find|strong="H4672" them, they returned|strong="H7725" to Jerusalem|strong="H3389".
21 And it came to pass, after|strong="H0310" they were departed|strong="H3212", that they came up|strong="H5927" out of the well|strong="H0875", and went|strong="H3212" and told|strong="H5046" king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732", and said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", Arise|strong="H6965", and pass quickly|strong="H4120" over|strong="H5674" the water|strong="H4325": for thus hath Ahithophel|strong="H0302" counselled|strong="H3289" against you.
22 Then David|strong="H1732" arose|strong="H6965", and all the people|strong="H5971" that were with him, and they passed over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383": by the morning|strong="H1242" light|strong="H0216" there lacked|strong="H5737" not one|strong="H0259" of them that was not gone over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383".
23 And when Ahithophel|strong="H0302" saw|strong="H7200" that his counsel|strong="H6098" was not followed|strong="H6213", he saddled|strong="H2280" his ass|strong="H2543", and arose|strong="H6965", and gat him home|strong="H3212" to his house|strong="H1004", to his city|strong="H5892", and put his household|strong="H1004" in order|strong="H6680", and hanged|strong="H2614" himself, and died|strong="H4191", and was buried|strong="H6912" in the sepulchre|strong="H6913" of his father|strong="H0001".
24 Then David|strong="H1732" came|strong="H0935" to Mahanaim|strong="H4266". And Absalom|strong="H0053" passed over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383", he and all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" with him.
25 And Absalom|strong="H0053" made|strong="H7760" Amasa|strong="H6021" captain of the host|strong="H6635" instead of Joab|strong="H3097": which Amasa|strong="H6021" was a man’s|strong="H0376" son|strong="H1121", whose name|strong="H8034" was Ithra|strong="H3501" an Israelite|strong="H3481", that went in|strong="H0935" to Abigail|strong="H0026" the daughter|strong="H1323" of Nahash|strong="H5176", sister|strong="H0269" to Zeruiah|strong="H6870" Joab’s|strong="H3097" mother|strong="H0517".
26 So Israel|strong="H3478" and Absalom|strong="H0053" pitched|strong="H2583" in the land|strong="H0776" of Gilead|strong="H1568".
27 And it came to pass, when David|strong="H1732" was come|strong="H0935" to Mahanaim|strong="H4266", that Shobi|strong="H7629" the son|strong="H1121" of Nahash|strong="H5176" of Rabbah|strong="H7237" of the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983", and Machir|strong="H4353" the son|strong="H1121" of Ammiel|strong="H5988" of Lo-debar|strong="H3810", and Barzillai|strong="H1271" the Gileadite|strong="H1569" of Rogelim|strong="H7274",
28 Brought|strong="H5066" beds|strong="H4904", and basons|strong="H5592", and earthen|strong="H3335" vessels|strong="H3627", and wheat|strong="H2406", and barley|strong="H8184", and flour|strong="H7058", and parched|strong="H7039" corn, and beans|strong="H6321", and lentiles|strong="H5742", and parched|strong="H7039" pulse,
29 And honey|strong="H1706", and butter|strong="H2529", and sheep|strong="H6629", and cheese|strong="H8194" of kine|strong="H1241", for David|strong="H1732", and for the people|strong="H5971" that were with him, to eat|strong="H0398": for they said|strong="H0559", The people|strong="H5971" is hungry|strong="H7457", and weary|strong="H5889", and thirsty|strong="H6771", in the wilderness|strong="H4057".
