2 Samuel 1

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

1 Now it came to pass after|strong="H0310" the death|strong="H4194" of Saul|strong="H7586", when David|strong="H1732" was returned|strong="H7725" from the slaughter|strong="H5221" of the Amalekites|strong="H6002", and David|strong="H1732" had abode|strong="H3427" two|strong="H8147" days|strong="H3117" in Ziklag|strong="H6860";

2 It came even to pass on the third|strong="H7992" day|strong="H3117", that, behold, a man|strong="H0376" came|strong="H0935" out of the camp|strong="H4264" from Saul|strong="H7586" with his clothes|strong="H0899" rent|strong="H7167", and earth|strong="H0127" upon his head|strong="H7218": and so it was, when he came|strong="H0935" to David|strong="H1732", that he fell|strong="H5307" to the earth|strong="H0776", and did obeisance|strong="H7812".

3 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto him, From whence comest|strong="H0935" thou? And he said|strong="H0559" unto him, Out of the camp|strong="H4264" of Israel|strong="H3478" am I escaped|strong="H4422".

4 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto him, How|strong="H4100" went the matter|strong="H1697"? I pray thee, tell|strong="H5046" me. And he answered|strong="H0559", That the people|strong="H5971" are fled|strong="H5127" from the battle|strong="H4421", and many|strong="H7235" of the people|strong="H5971" also are fallen|strong="H5307" and dead|strong="H4191"; and Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121" are dead|strong="H4191" also.

5 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto the young man|strong="H5288" that told|strong="H5046" him, How knowest|strong="H3045" thou that Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121" be dead|strong="H4191"?

6 And the young man|strong="H5288" that told|strong="H5046" him said|strong="H0559", As I happened|strong="H7136" by chance|strong="H7122" upon mount|strong="H2022" Gilboa|strong="H1533", behold, Saul|strong="H7586" leaned|strong="H8172" upon his spear|strong="H2595"; and, lo, the chariots|strong="H7393" and horsemen|strong="H1167" followed hard|strong="H1692" after him.

7 And when he looked|strong="H6437" behind|strong="H0310" him, he saw|strong="H7200" me, and called|strong="H7121" unto me. And I answered|strong="H0559", Here am I.

8 And he said|strong="H0559" unto me, Who art thou? And I answered|strong="H0559" him, I am an Amalekite|strong="H6003".

9 He said|strong="H0559" unto me again, Stand|strong="H5975", I pray thee, upon me, and slay|strong="H4191" me: for anguish|strong="H7661" is come|strong="H0270" upon me, because my life|strong="H5315" is yet whole in me.

10 So I stood|strong="H5975" upon him, and slew|strong="H4191" him, because I was sure|strong="H3045" that he could not live|strong="H2421" after|strong="H0310" that he was fallen|strong="H5307": and I took|strong="H3947" the crown|strong="H5145" that was upon his head|strong="H7218", and the bracelet|strong="H0685" that was on his arm|strong="H2220", and have brought|strong="H0935" them hither unto my lord|strong="H0113".

11 Then David|strong="H1732" took hold|strong="H2388" on his clothes|strong="H0899", and rent|strong="H7167" them; and likewise all the men|strong="H0582" that were with him:

12 And they mourned|strong="H5594", and wept|strong="H1058", and fasted|strong="H6684" until even|strong="H6153", for Saul|strong="H7586", and for Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121", and for the people|strong="H5971" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and for the house|strong="H1004" of Israel|strong="H3478"; because they were fallen|strong="H5307" by the sword|strong="H2719".

13 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto the young man|strong="H5288" that told|strong="H5046" him, Whence art thou? And he answered|strong="H0559", I am the son|strong="H1121" of a stranger|strong="H0376", an Amalekite|strong="H6003".

14 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto him, How wast thou not afraid|strong="H3372" to stretch forth|strong="H7971" thine hand|strong="H3027" to destroy|strong="H7843" the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* anointed|strong="H4899"?

15 And David|strong="H1732" called|strong="H7121" one|strong="H0259" of the young men|strong="H5288", and said|strong="H0559", Go near|strong="H5066", and fall|strong="H6293" upon him. And he smote|strong="H5221" him that he died|strong="H4191".

16 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Thy blood|strong="H1818" be upon thy head|strong="H7218"; for thy mouth|strong="H6310" hath testified|strong="H6030" against thee, saying|strong="H0559", I have slain|strong="H4191" the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* anointed|strong="H4899".

17 And David|strong="H1732" lamented|strong="H6969" with this lamentation|strong="H7015" over Saul|strong="H7586" and over Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121":

18 (Also he bade|strong="H0559" them teach|strong="H3925" the children|strong="H1121" of Judah|strong="H3063" the use of the bow|strong="H7198": behold, it is written|strong="H3789" in the book|strong="H5612" of Jasher|strong="H3477".)

19 The beauty|strong="H6643" of Israel|strong="H3478" is slain|strong="H2491" upon thy high places|strong="H1116": how are the mighty|strong="H1368" fallen|strong="H5307"!

20 Tell|strong="H5046" it not in Gath|strong="H1661", publish|strong="H1319" it not in the streets|strong="H2351" of Askelon|strong="H0831"; lest the daughters|strong="H1323" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" rejoice|strong="H8055", lest the daughters|strong="H1323" of the uncircumcised|strong="H6189" triumph|strong="H5937".

21 Ye mountains|strong="H2022" of Gilboa|strong="H1533", let there be no dew|strong="H2919", neither let there be rain|strong="H4306", upon you, nor fields|strong="H7704" of offerings|strong="H8641": for there the shield|strong="H4043" of the mighty|strong="H1368" is vilely cast away|strong="H1602", the shield|strong="H4043" of Saul|strong="H7586", as though he had not been anointed|strong="H4899" with oil|strong="H8081".

22 From the blood|strong="H1818" of the slain|strong="H2491", from the fat|strong="H2459" of the mighty|strong="H1368", the bow|strong="H7198" of Jonathan|strong="H3083" turned|strong="H7734" not back|strong="H0268", and the sword|strong="H2719" of Saul|strong="H7586" returned|strong="H7725" not empty|strong="H7387".

23 Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3083" were lovely|strong="H0157" and pleasant|strong="H5273" in their lives|strong="H2416", and in their death|strong="H4194" they were not divided|strong="H6504": they were swifter|strong="H7043" than eagles|strong="H5404", they were stronger|strong="H1396" than lions|strong="H0738".

24 Ye daughters|strong="H1323" of Israel|strong="H3478", weep over|strong="H1058" Saul|strong="H7586", who clothed|strong="H3847" you in scarlet|strong="H8144", with other delights|strong="H5730", who put|strong="H5927" on ornaments|strong="H5716" of gold|strong="H2091" upon your apparel|strong="H3830".

25 How are the mighty|strong="H1368" fallen|strong="H5307" in the midst|strong="H8432" of the battle|strong="H4421"! O Jonathan|strong="H3083", thou wast slain|strong="H2491" in thine high places|strong="H1116".

26 I am distressed|strong="H6887" for thee, my brother|strong="H0251" Jonathan|strong="H3083": very|strong="H3966" pleasant|strong="H5276" hast thou been unto me: thy love|strong="H0160" to me was wonderful|strong="H6381", passing the love|strong="H0160" of women|strong="H0802".

27 How are the mighty|strong="H1368" fallen|strong="H5307", and the weapons|strong="H3627" of war|strong="H4421" perished|strong="H0006"!
