Samuel 4

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

And the word|strong="H1697" of Samuel|strong="H8050" came to all Israel|strong="H3478". Now Israel|strong="H3478" went out|strong="H3318" against|strong="H7125" the Philistines|strong="H6430" to battle|strong="H4421", and pitched|strong="H2583" beside Eben-ezer|strong="H0072": and the Philistines|strong="H6430" pitched|strong="H2583" in Aphek|strong="H0663".

And the Philistines|strong="H6430" put themselves in array|strong="H6186" against|strong="H7125" Israel|strong="H3478": and when they joined|strong="H5203" battle|strong="H4421", Israel|strong="H3478" was smitten|strong="H5062" before|strong="H6440" the Philistines|strong="H6430": and they slew|strong="H5221" of the army|strong="H4634" in the field|strong="H7704" about four|strong="H0702" thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376".

And when the people|strong="H5971" were come|strong="H0935" into the camp|strong="H4264", the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel|strong="H3478" said|strong="H0559", Wherefore hath the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* smitten|strong="H5062" us to day|strong="H3117" before|strong="H6440" the Philistines|strong="H6430"? Let us fetch|strong="H3947" the ark|strong="H0727" of the covenant|strong="H1285" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* out of Shiloh|strong="H7887" unto us, that, when it cometh|strong="H0935" among|strong="H7130" us, it may save|strong="H3467" us out of the hand|strong="H3709" of our enemies|strong="H0341".

So the people|strong="H5971" sent|strong="H7971" to Shiloh|strong="H7887", that they might bring|strong="H5375" from thence the ark|strong="H0727" of the covenant|strong="H1285" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* of hosts|strong="H6635", which dwelleth|strong="H3427" between the cherubims|strong="H3742": and the two|strong="H8147" sons|strong="H1121" of Eli|strong="H5941", Hophni|strong="H2652" and Phinehas|strong="H6372", were there with the ark|strong="H0727" of the covenant|strong="H1285" of God|strong="H0430".

And when the ark|strong="H0727" of the covenant|strong="H1285" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* came|strong="H0935" into the camp|strong="H4264", all Israel|strong="H3478" shouted|strong="H7321" with a great|strong="H1419" shout|strong="H8643", so that the earth|strong="H0776" rang again|strong="H1949".

And when the Philistines|strong="H6430" heard|strong="H8085" the noise|strong="H6963" of the shout|strong="H8643", they said|strong="H0559", What meaneth the noise|strong="H6963" of this great|strong="H1419" shout|strong="H8643" in the camp|strong="H4264" of the Hebrews|strong="H5680"? And they understood|strong="H3045" that the ark|strong="H0727" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* was come|strong="H0935" into the camp|strong="H4264".

And the Philistines|strong="H6430" were afraid|strong="H3372", for they said|strong="H0559", God|strong="H0430" is come|strong="H0935" into the camp|strong="H4264". And they said|strong="H0559", Woe|strong="H0188" unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore|strong="H0865".

Woe|strong="H0188" unto us! who shall deliver|strong="H5337" us out of the hand|strong="H3027" of these mighty|strong="H0117" Gods|strong="H0430"? these are the Gods|strong="H0430" that smote|strong="H5221" the Egyptians|strong="H4714" with all the plagues|strong="H4347" in the wilderness|strong="H4057".

Be strong|strong="H2388", and quit|strong="H1961" yourselves like men|strong="H0582", O ye Philistines|strong="H6430", that ye be not servants|strong="H5647" unto the Hebrews|strong="H5680", as they have been|strong="H5647" to you: quit|strong="H1961" yourselves like men|strong="H0582", and fight|strong="H3898".

And the Philistines|strong="H6430" fought|strong="H3898", and Israel|strong="H3478" was smitten|strong="H5062", and they fled|strong="H5127" every man|strong="H0376" into his tent|strong="H0168": and there was a very|strong="H3966" great|strong="H1419" slaughter|strong="H4347"; for there fell|strong="H5307" of Israel|strong="H3478" thirty|strong="H7970" thousand|strong="H0505" footmen|strong="H7273".

And the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430" was taken|strong="H3947"; and the two|strong="H8147" sons|strong="H1121" of Eli|strong="H5941", Hophni|strong="H2652" and Phinehas|strong="H6372", were slain|strong="H4191".

And there ran|strong="H7323" a man|strong="H0376" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" out of the army|strong="H4634", and came|strong="H0935" to Shiloh|strong="H7887" the same day|strong="H3117" with his clothes|strong="H4055" rent|strong="H7167", and with earth|strong="H0127" upon his head|strong="H7218".

And when he came|strong="H0935", lo, Eli|strong="H5941" sat|strong="H3427" upon a seat|strong="H3678" by the wayside|strong="H1870" watching|strong="H6822": for his heart|strong="H3820" trembled|strong="H2730" for the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430". And when the man|strong="H0376" came|strong="H0935" into the city|strong="H5892", and told|strong="H5046" it, all the city|strong="H5892" cried out|strong="H2199".

And when Eli|strong="H5941" heard|strong="H8085" the noise|strong="H6963" of the crying|strong="H6818", he said|strong="H0559", What meaneth the noise|strong="H6963" of this tumult|strong="H1995"? And the man|strong="H0376" came|strong="H0935" in hastily|strong="H4116", and told|strong="H5046" Eli|strong="H5941".

Now Eli|strong="H5941" was ninety|strong="H8673" and eight|strong="H8083" years|strong="H8141" old|strong="H1121"; and his eyes|strong="H5869" were dim|strong="H6965", that he could|strong="H3201" not see|strong="H7200".

And the man|strong="H0376" said|strong="H0559" unto Eli|strong="H5941", I am he that came|strong="H0935" out of the army|strong="H4634", and I fled|strong="H5127" to day|strong="H3117" out of the army|strong="H4634". And he said|strong="H0559", What is there done|strong="H1697", my son|strong="H1121"?

And the messenger|strong="H1319" answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", Israel|strong="H3478" is fled|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" the Philistines|strong="H6430", and there hath been also a great|strong="H1419" slaughter|strong="H4046" among the people|strong="H5971", and thy two|strong="H8147" sons|strong="H1121" also, Hophni|strong="H2652" and Phinehas|strong="H6372", are dead|strong="H4191", and the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430" is taken|strong="H3947".

And it came to pass, when he made mention|strong="H2142" of the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430", that he fell|strong="H5307" from off the seat|strong="H3678" backward|strong="H0322" by|strong="H1157" the side|strong="H3027" of the gate|strong="H8179", and his neck|strong="H4665" brake|strong="H7665", and he died|strong="H4191": for he was an old|strong="H2204" man|strong="H0376", and heavy|strong="H3513". And he had judged|strong="H8199" Israel|strong="H3478" forty|strong="H0705" years|strong="H8141".

And his daughter in law|strong="H3618", Phinehas’|strong="H6372" wife|strong="H0802", was with child|strong="H2030", near to be delivered|strong="H3205": and when she heard|strong="H8085" the tidings|strong="H8052" that|strong="H0413" the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430" was taken|strong="H3947", and that her father in law|strong="H2524" and her husband|strong="H0376" were dead|strong="H4191", she bowed|strong="H3766" herself and travailed|strong="H3205"; for her pains|strong="H6735" came|strong="H2015" upon her.

And about the time|strong="H6256" of her death|strong="H4191" the women that stood|strong="H5324" by her said|strong="H1696" unto her, Fear|strong="H3372" not; for thou hast born|strong="H3205" a son|strong="H1121". But she answered|strong="H6030" not, neither did she regard|strong="H7896" it.

And she named|strong="H7121" the child|strong="H5288" I-chabod|strong="H0350", saying|strong="H0559", The glory|strong="H3519" is departed|strong="H1540" from Israel|strong="H3478": because|strong="H0413" the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430" was taken|strong="H3947", and because of her father in law|strong="H2524" and her husband|strong="H0376".

And she said|strong="H0559", The glory|strong="H3519" is departed|strong="H1540" from Israel|strong="H3478": for the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430" is taken|strong="H3947".
