And David|strong="H1732" arose|strong="H6965", and went down|strong="H3381" to the wilderness|strong="H4057" of Paran|strong="H6290".
2 And there was a man|strong="H0376" in Maon|strong="H4584", whose possessions|strong="H4639" were in Carmel|strong="H3760"; and the man|strong="H0376" was very|strong="H3966" great|strong="H1419", and he had three|strong="H7969" thousand|strong="H0505" sheep|strong="H6629", and a thousand|strong="H0505" goats|strong="H5795": and he was shearing|strong="H1494" his sheep|strong="H6629" in Carmel|strong="H3760".
3 Now the name|strong="H8034" of the man|strong="H0376" was Nabal|strong="H5037"; and the name|strong="H8034" of his wife|strong="H0802" Abigail|strong="H0026": and she was a woman|strong="H0802" of good|strong="H2896" understanding|strong="H7922", and of a beautiful|strong="H3303" countenance|strong="H8389": but the man|strong="H0376" was churlish|strong="H7186" and evil|strong="H7451" in his doings|strong="H4611"; and he was of the house of Caleb|strong="H3614".
4 And David|strong="H1732" heard|strong="H8085" in the wilderness|strong="H4057" that Nabal|strong="H5037" did shear|strong="H1494" his sheep|strong="H6629".
5 And David|strong="H1732" sent out|strong="H7971" ten|strong="H6235" young men|strong="H5288", and David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto the young men|strong="H5288", Get you up|strong="H5927" to Carmel|strong="H3760", and go|strong="H0935" to Nabal|strong="H5037", and greet|strong="H7592" him in my name|strong="H8034":
6 And thus shall ye say|strong="H0559" to him that liveth|strong="H2416" in prosperity, Peace|strong="H7965" be both to thee, and peace|strong="H7965" be to thine house|strong="H1004", and peace|strong="H7965" be unto all that thou hast.
7 And now I have heard|strong="H8085" that thou hast shearers|strong="H1494": now thy shepherds|strong="H7462" which were with us, we hurt|strong="H3637" them not, neither was there ought|strong="H3972" missing|strong="H6485" unto them, all the while|strong="H3117" they were in Carmel|strong="H3760".
8 Ask|strong="H7592" thy young men|strong="H5288", and they will shew|strong="H5046" thee. Wherefore let the young men|strong="H5288" find|strong="H4672" favour|strong="H2580" in thine eyes|strong="H5869": for we come|strong="H0935" in a good|strong="H2896" day|strong="H3117": give|strong="H5414", I pray thee, whatsoever cometh|strong="H4672" to thine hand|strong="H3027" unto thy servants|strong="H5650", and to thy son|strong="H1121" David|strong="H1732".
9 And when David’s|strong="H1732" young men|strong="H5288" came|strong="H0935", they spake|strong="H1696" to Nabal|strong="H5037" according to all those words|strong="H1697" in the name|strong="H8034" of David|strong="H1732", and ceased|strong="H5117".
10 And Nabal|strong="H5037" answered|strong="H6030" David’s|strong="H1732" servants|strong="H5650", and said|strong="H0559", Who is David|strong="H1732"? and who is the son|strong="H1121" of Jesse|strong="H3448"? there be many|strong="H7231" servants|strong="H5650" now a days|strong="H3117" that break away|strong="H6555" every man|strong="H0376" from|strong="H6440" his master|strong="H0113".
11 Shall I then take|strong="H3947" my bread|strong="H3899", and my water|strong="H4325", and my flesh|strong="H2878" that I have killed|strong="H2873" for my shearers|strong="H1494", and give|strong="H5414" it unto men|strong="H0582", whom I know|strong="H3045" not whence they be?
12 So David’s|strong="H1732" young men|strong="H5288" turned|strong="H2015" their way|strong="H1870", and went again|strong="H7725", and came|strong="H0935" and told|strong="H5046" him all those sayings|strong="H1697".
13 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto his men|strong="H0582", Gird ye on|strong="H2296" every man|strong="H0376" his sword|strong="H2719". And they girded on|strong="H2296" every man|strong="H0376" his sword|strong="H2719"; and David|strong="H1732" also girded on|strong="H2296" his sword|strong="H2719": and there went up|strong="H5927" after|strong="H0310" David|strong="H1732" about four|strong="H0702" hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376"; and two hundred|strong="H3967" abode|strong="H3427" by the stuff|strong="H3627".
14 But one|strong="H0259" of the young men|strong="H5288" told|strong="H5046" Abigail|strong="H0026", Nabal’s|strong="H5037" wife|strong="H0802", saying|strong="H0559", Behold, David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" messengers|strong="H4397" out of the wilderness|strong="H4057" to salute|strong="H1288" our master|strong="H0113"; and he railed|strong="H5860" on them.
15 But the men|strong="H0582" were very|strong="H3966" good|strong="H2896" unto us, and we were not hurt|strong="H3637", neither missed|strong="H6485" we any thing|strong="H3972", as long as|strong="H3117" we were conversant|strong="H1980" with them, when we were in the fields|strong="H7704":
16 They were a wall|strong="H2346" unto us both by night|strong="H3915" and day|strong="H3119", all the while|strong="H3117" we were with them keeping|strong="H7462" the sheep|strong="H6629".
17 Now therefore know|strong="H3045" and consider|strong="H7200" what thou wilt do|strong="H6213"; for evil|strong="H7451" is determined|strong="H3615" against our master|strong="H0113", and against all his household|strong="H1004": for he is such a son|strong="H1121" of Belial|strong="H1100", that a man cannot speak|strong="H1696" to him.
18 Then Abigail|strong="H0026" made haste|strong="H4116", and took|strong="H3947" two hundred|strong="H3967" loaves|strong="H3899", and two|strong="H8147" bottles|strong="H5035" of wine|strong="H3196", and five|strong="H2568" sheep|strong="H6629" ready dressed|strong="H6213", and five|strong="H2568" measures|strong="H5429" of parched|strong="H7039" corn, and an hundred|strong="H3967" clusters of raisins|strong="H6778", and two hundred|strong="H3967" cakes|strong="H1690" of figs, and laid|strong="H7760" them on asses|strong="H2543".
19 And she said|strong="H0559" unto her servants|strong="H5288", Go on|strong="H5674" before|strong="H6440" me; behold, I come|strong="H0935" after|strong="H0310" you. But she told|strong="H5046" not her husband|strong="H0376" Nabal|strong="H5037".
20 And it was so, as she rode|strong="H7392" on the ass|strong="H2543", that she came down|strong="H3381" by the covert|strong="H5643" of the hill|strong="H2022", and, behold, David|strong="H1732" and his men|strong="H0582" came down|strong="H3381" against|strong="H7125" her; and she met|strong="H6298" them.
21 Now David|strong="H1732" had said|strong="H0559", Surely in vain|strong="H8267" have I kept|strong="H8104" all that this|strong="H2088" fellow hath in the wilderness|strong="H4057", so that nothing|strong="H3972" was missed|strong="H6485" of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited|strong="H7725" me evil|strong="H7451" for good|strong="H2896".
22 So|strong="H3541" and more|strong="H3254" also do|strong="H6213" God|strong="H0430" unto the enemies|strong="H0341" of David|strong="H1732", if I leave|strong="H7604" of all that pertain to him by|strong="H5704" the morning|strong="H1242" light|strong="H0216" any that pisseth|strong="H8366" against the wall|strong="H7023".
23 And when Abigail|strong="H0026" saw|strong="H7200" David|strong="H1732", she hasted|strong="H4116", and lighted off|strong="H3381" the ass|strong="H2543", and fell|strong="H5307" before|strong="H0639" David|strong="H1732" on her face|strong="H6440", and bowed|strong="H7812" herself to the ground|strong="H0776",
24 And fell|strong="H5307" at his feet|strong="H7272", and said|strong="H0559", Upon me, my lord|strong="H0113", upon me let this iniquity|strong="H5771" be: and let thine handmaid|strong="H0519", I pray thee, speak|strong="H1696" in thine audience|strong="H0241", and hear|strong="H8085" the words|strong="H1697" of thine handmaid|strong="H0589".
25 Let|strong="H7760" not my lord|strong="H0113", I pray thee, regard|strong="H3820" this man|strong="H0376" of Belial|strong="H1100", even Nabal|strong="H5037": for as his name|strong="H8034" is, so is he; Nabal|strong="H5037" is his name|strong="H8034", and folly|strong="H5039" is with him: but I thine handmaid|strong="H0519" saw|strong="H7200" not the young men|strong="H5288" of my lord|strong="H0113", whom thou didst send|strong="H7971".
26 Now therefore, my lord|strong="H0113", as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416", and as thy soul|strong="H5315" liveth|strong="H2416", seeing the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath withholden|strong="H4513" thee from coming|strong="H0935" to shed blood|strong="H1818", and from avenging|strong="H3467" thyself with thine own hand|strong="H3027", now let thine enemies|strong="H0341", and they that seek|strong="H1245" evil|strong="H7451" to my lord|strong="H0113", be as Nabal|strong="H5037".
27 And now this blessing|strong="H1293" which thine handmaid|strong="H8198" hath brought|strong="H0935" unto my lord|strong="H0113", let it even be given|strong="H5414" unto the young men|strong="H5288" that follow|strong="H1980" my lord|strong="H0113".
28 I pray thee, forgive|strong="H5375" the trespass|strong="H6588" of thine handmaid|strong="H0519": for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* will certainly|strong="H6213" make|strong="H6213" my lord|strong="H0113" a sure|strong="H0539" house|strong="H1004"; because my lord|strong="H0113" fighteth|strong="H3898" the battles|strong="H4421" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and evil|strong="H7451" hath not been found|strong="H4672" in thee all thy days|strong="H3117".
29 Yet a man|strong="H0120" is risen|strong="H6965" to pursue|strong="H7291" thee, and to seek|strong="H1245" thy soul|strong="H5315": but the soul|strong="H5315" of my lord|strong="H0113" shall be bound|strong="H6887" in the bundle|strong="H6872" of life|strong="H2416" with the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* thy God|strong="H0430"; and the souls|strong="H5315" of thine enemies|strong="H0341", them shall he sling out|strong="H7049", as out of the middle|strong="H8432" of a sling|strong="H7050".
30 And it shall come to pass, when the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall have done|strong="H6213" to my lord|strong="H0113" according to all the good|strong="H2896" that he hath spoken|strong="H1696" concerning thee, and shall have appointed|strong="H6680" thee ruler|strong="H5057" over Israel|strong="H3478";
31 That this shall be no grief|strong="H6330" unto thee, nor offence|strong="H4383" of heart|strong="H3820" unto my lord|strong="H0113", either that thou hast shed|strong="H8210" blood|strong="H1818" causeless|strong="H2600", or that my lord|strong="H0113" hath avenged|strong="H3467" himself: but when the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* shall have dealt well|strong="H3190" with my lord|strong="H0113", then remember|strong="H2142" thine handmaid|strong="H0519".
32 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Abigail|strong="H0026", Blessed|strong="H1288" be the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", which sent|strong="H7971" thee this day|strong="H3117" to meet|strong="H7125" me:
33 And blessed|strong="H1288" be thy advice|strong="H2940", and blessed|strong="H1288" be thou, which hast kept|strong="H3607" me this day|strong="H3117" from coming|strong="H0935" to shed blood|strong="H1818", and from avenging|strong="H3467" myself with mine own hand|strong="H3027".
34 For in very deed|strong="H0199", as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478" liveth|strong="H2416", which hath kept me back|strong="H4513" from hurting|strong="H7489" thee, except|strong="H3884" thou hadst hasted|strong="H4116" and come|strong="H0935" to meet|strong="H7125" me, surely there had not been left|strong="H3498" unto Nabal|strong="H5037" by the morning|strong="H1242" light|strong="H0216" any that pisseth|strong="H8366" against the wall|strong="H7023".
35 So David|strong="H1732" received|strong="H3947" of her hand|strong="H3027" that which she had brought|strong="H0935" him, and said|strong="H0559" unto her, Go up|strong="H5927" in peace|strong="H7965" to thine house|strong="H1004"; see|strong="H7200", I have hearkened|strong="H8085" to thy voice|strong="H6963", and have accepted|strong="H5375" thy person|strong="H6440".
36 And Abigail|strong="H0026" came|strong="H0935" to Nabal|strong="H5037"; and, behold, he held a feast|strong="H4960" in his house|strong="H1004", like the feast|strong="H4960" of a king|strong="H4428"; and Nabal’s|strong="H5037" heart|strong="H3820" was merry|strong="H2896" within him, for he was very|strong="H3966" drunken|strong="H7910": wherefore she told|strong="H5046" him nothing|strong="H1697", less|strong="H6996" or more|strong="H1419", until the morning|strong="H1242" light|strong="H0216".
37 But it came to pass in the morning|strong="H1242", when the wine|strong="H3196" was gone out|strong="H3318" of Nabal|strong="H5037", and his wife|strong="H0802" had told|strong="H5046" him these things|strong="H1697", that his heart|strong="H3820" died|strong="H4191" within|strong="H7130" him, and he became as a stone|strong="H0068".
38 And it came to pass about ten|strong="H6235" days|strong="H3117" after, that the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* smote|strong="H5062" Nabal|strong="H5037", that he died|strong="H4191".
39 And when David|strong="H1732" heard|strong="H8085" that Nabal|strong="H5037" was dead|strong="H4191", he said|strong="H0559", Blessed|strong="H1288" be the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, that hath pleaded|strong="H7378" the cause|strong="H7379" of my reproach|strong="H2781" from the hand|strong="H3027" of Nabal|strong="H5037", and hath kept|strong="H2820" his servant|strong="H5650" from evil|strong="H7451": for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath returned|strong="H7725" the wickedness|strong="H7451" of Nabal|strong="H5037" upon his own head|strong="H7218". And David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" and communed|strong="H1696" with Abigail|strong="H0026", to take|strong="H3947" her to him to wife|strong="H0802".
40 And when the servants|strong="H5650" of David|strong="H1732" were come|strong="H0935" to Abigail|strong="H0026" to Carmel|strong="H3760", they spake|strong="H1696" unto her, saying|strong="H0559", David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" us unto thee, to take|strong="H3947" thee to him to wife|strong="H0802".
41 And she arose|strong="H6965", and bowed|strong="H7812" herself on her face|strong="H0639" to the earth|strong="H0776", and said|strong="H0559", Behold, let thine handmaid|strong="H0519" be a servant|strong="H8198" to wash|strong="H7364" the feet|strong="H7272" of the servants|strong="H5650" of my lord|strong="H0113".
42 And Abigail|strong="H0026" hasted|strong="H4116", and arose|strong="H6965", and rode|strong="H7392" upon an ass|strong="H2543", with five|strong="H2568" damsels|strong="H5291" of hers that went|strong="H1980" after|strong="H7272" her; and she went|strong="H3212" after|strong="H0310" the messengers|strong="H4397" of David|strong="H1732", and became his wife|strong="H0802".
43 David|strong="H1732" also took|strong="H3947" Ahinoam|strong="H0293" of Jezreel|strong="H3157"; and they were also both|strong="H8147" of them his wives|strong="H0802".
44 But Saul|strong="H7586" had given|strong="H5414" Michal|strong="H4324" his daughter|strong="H1323", David’s|strong="H1732" wife|strong="H0802", to Phalti|strong="H6406" the son|strong="H1121" of Laish|strong="H3919", which was of Gallim|strong="H1554".
