1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.
1 Então olhei de novo para toda a injustiça que existe neste mundo. Vi muitos sendo explorados e maltratados. Eles choravam, mas ninguém os ajudava. Ninguém os ajudava porque os seus perseguidores tinham o poder do seu lado.
2 And I praised the dead rather than the living:
2 Por isso, cheguei a esta conclusão: aqueles que morreram são mais felizes do que os que continuam vivos.
3 And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.
3 Porém mais felizes do que todos são aqueles que ainda não nasceram e que ainda não viram as injustiças que há neste mundo.
4 Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighhour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.
4 Também descobri por que as pessoas se esforçam tanto para ter sucesso no seu trabalho: é porque elas querem ser mais do que os outros. Mas tudo é ilusão. É tudo como correr atrás do vento.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh, saying:
5 Dizem que só mesmo um louco chegaria ao ponto de cruzar os braços e passar fome até morrer.
6 Better is a handful with rest, than both hands full with labour, and vexation of mind.
6 Pode ser. Mas é melhor ter pouco numa das mãos, com paz de espírito, do que estar sempre com as duas mãos cheias de trabalho, tentando pegar o vento.
7 Considering I found also another vanity under the sun:
7 Descobri que na vida existe mais uma coisa que não vale a pena:
8 There is but one, and he hath not a second, no child, no brother, and yet he ceaseth not to labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches, neither doth he reflect, saying: For whom do I labour, and defraud my soul of good things? in this also is vanity, and a grievous vexation.
8 é o homem viver sozinho, sem amigos, sem filhos, sem irmãos, sempre trabalhando e nunca satisfeito com a riqueza que tem. Para que é que ele trabalha tanto, deixando de aproveitar as coisas boas da vida? Isso também é ilusão, é uma triste maneira de viver.
9 It is better therefore that two should be together, than one: for they have the advantage of their society:
9 É melhor haver dois do que um, porque duas pessoas trabalhando juntas podem ganhar muito mais.
10 If one fall he shall be supported by the other: woe to him that is alone, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.
10 Se uma delas cai, a outra a ajuda a se levantar. Mas, se alguém está sozinho e cai, fica em má situação porque não tem ninguém que o ajude a se levantar.
11 And if two lie together, they shall warm one another: how shall one alone be warmed?
11 Se faz frio, dois podem dormir juntos e se esquentar; mas um sozinho, como é que vai se esquentar?
12 And if a man prevail against one, two shall withstand him: a threefold cord is not easily broken.
12 Dois homens podem resistir a um ataque que derrotaria um deles se estivesse sozinho. Uma corda de três cordões é difícil de arrebentar.
13 Better is a child that is poor and wise, than a king that is old and foolish, who knoweth not to foresee for hereafter.
13 O moço pobre mas sábio vale mais do que o rei velho e sem juízo que já não aceita conselhos.
14 Because out of prison and chains sometimes a man cometh forth to a kingdom: and another born king is consumed with poverty.
14 Um homem pode muito bem sair da cadeia e se tornar o rei do seu país, mesmo tendo nascido pobre.
15 I saw all men living, that walk under the sun with the second young man, who shall rise up in his place.
15 Eu pensei em todas as pessoas que vivem neste mundo e imaginei que existe entre elas, em algum lugar, um moço que tomará o lugar do rei.
16 The number of the people, of all that were before him is infinite: and they that shall come afterwards, shall not rejoice in him: but this also is vanity, and vexation of spirit.
16 O número de pessoas que um rei governa é muito grande; no entanto, quando deixa de ser rei, ninguém é agradecido pelo que ele fez. É tudo ilusão, é tudo como correr atrás do vento.
17 Keep thy foot, when thou goest into the house of God, and draw nigh to hear. For much better is obedience, than the victims of fools, who know not what evil they do.
