1 And Eliseus said: Hear ye the word of the Lord: Thus saith the Lord: To morrow about this time a bushel of fine hour shall be sold for a stater, and two bushels of barley for a stater, in the gate of Samaria.
1 Então Eliseu disse: — Ouçam a palavra do
2 Then one of the lords, upon whose hand the king leaned, answering the man of God, said: If the Lord should make hood-gates in heaven, can that possibly be which thou sayest? And he said: Thou shalt see it with thy eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
2 Porém o capitão em cujo braço o rei se apoiava respondeu ao homem de Deus: — Mesmo que o O profeta respondeu: — Eis que você verá isso com os seus próprios olhos, mas não comerá disso.
3 Now there were four lepers, at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another: What mean we to stay here till we die?
3 Quatro homens leprosos estavam à entrada do portão da cidade. Eles disseram uns aos outros: — Para que vamos ficar aqui sentados até morrer?
4 If we will enter into the city, we shall die with the famine: and if we will remain here, we must also die: come, therefore, and let us run over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare us, we shall live: but if they kill us, we shall but die.
4 Se decidirmos entrar na cidade, há fome na cidade, e morreremos lá; se ficarmos sentados aqui, também morreremos. Vamos então para o arraial do sírios e nos entreguemos a eles. Se nos deixarem viver, viveremos; se nos matarem, apenas morreremos.
5 So they arose in the evening, to go to the Syrian camp, And when they were come to the first part of the camp of the Syrians, they found no man there.
5 Ao anoitecer, eles se levantaram para ir até o arraial dos sírios. Quando chegaram às imediações do arraial, eis que lá não havia ninguém.
6 For the Lord had made them hear, in the camp of Syria, the noise of chariots, and of horses, and of a very great army, and they said one to another: Behold the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hethites, and of the Egyptians, and they are come upon us.
6 Porque o Senhor tinha feito com que no arraial dos sírios se ouvisse um ruído de carros de guerra e de cavalos e o ruído de um grande exército, de maneira que disseram uns aos outros: — Eis que o rei de Israel contratou os reis dos heteus e os reis dos egípcios, para virem contra nós.
7 Wherefore they arose, and fled away in the dark, and left their tents, and their horses and asses in the camp, and fled, desiring to save their lives.
7 Por isso, ao anoitecer, eles se levantaram e fugiram, abandonando as suas tendas, os seus cavalos e os seus jumentos, e deixando o arraial como estava. Fugiram para salvar a sua vida.
8 So when these lepers were come to the beginning of the camp, they went into one tent, and ate and drank: and they took from thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went, and hid it: and they came again, and went into another tent, and carried from thence in like manner, and hid it.
8 Assim, quando aqueles leprosos chegaram às imediações do arraial, entraram numa tenda, comeram e beberam; depois levaram dali prata, ouro e roupas; então se foram e esconderam tudo. Voltaram, entraram em outra tenda, e dali também levaram o que havia e esconderam.
9 Then they said one to another: We do not well: for this is a day of good tidings. If we hold our peace, and do not tell it till the morning, we shall be charged with a crime: come, let us go and tell it in the king's court.
9 Então disseram uns aos outros: — Não é certo o que estamos fazendo. Este dia é um dia de boas-novas, e nós nos calamos. Se esperarmos até a luz da manhã, seremos tidos por culpados. Vamos agora mesmo anunciar isto no palácio real.
10 So they came to the gate of the city, and told them, saying: We went to the camp of the Syrians, and we found no man there, but horses, and asses tied, and the tents standing.
10 Assim, eles foram e gritaram para os porteiros da cidade, anunciando o seguinte: — Fomos ao arraial dos sírios, e lá não vimos nem ouvimos ninguém. Encontramos apenas os cavalos e os jumentos amarrados, e as tendas como estavam.
11 Then the guards of the gate went, and told it within the king's palace.
11 Então os porteiros gritaram e fizeram anunciar a notícia no interior do palácio real.
12 And he arose in the night and said to his servants: I tell you what the Syrians have done to us: They know that we suffer great famine, and therefore they are gone out of the camp, and lie hid in the fields, saying: When they come out of the city we shall take them alive, and then we may get into the city.
12 O rei se levantou de noite e disse a seus servos: — Deixem que eu explique a vocês o que os sírios nos fizeram. Eles sabem que nós estamos famintos. Por isso, saíram do arraial e se esconderam no campo, pensando assim: “Quando eles saírem da cidade, nós os apanharemos vivos e entraremos na cidade.”
13 And one of his servants answered: Let us take the five horses that are remaining in the city (because there are no more in the whole multitude of Israel, for the rest are consumed,) and let us send and see.
13 Então um dos servos do rei tomou a palavra e disse: — Vamos enviar alguns homens com cinco dos cavalos que ainda restam na cidade e ver o que acontece. Se morrerem, apenas terão a mesma sorte da multidão dos israelitas que já morreram.
14 They brought therefore two horses, and the king sent into the camp of the Syrians, saying: Go, and see.
14 Assim, pegaram dois carros de guerra com cavalos, e o rei enviou os homens atrás do exército dos sírios, dizendo: — Vão ver o que está acontecendo.
15 And they went after them as far as the Jordan: and behold all the way was full of garments, and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their fright, and the messengers returned end told the king.
15 Eles foram atrás dos sírios até o Jordão, e eis que todo o caminho estava cheio de roupas e de armas que os sírios, na sua pressa, tinham jogado fora. Os mensageiros voltaram e anunciaram isto ao rei.
16 And the people going out pillaged the camp of the Syrians: and a bushel of fine flour was sold for a stater, and two bushels of barley for a stater, according to the word of the Lord.
16 Então o povo saiu e saqueou o arraial dos sírios. E assim uma medida da melhor farinha era vendida por uma moeda de prata, e duas medidas de cevada, por uma moeda de prata, segundo a palavra do Senhor .
17 And the king appointed that lord on whose hand he leaned, to stand at the gate: and the people trod upon him in the entrance of the gate; and he died, as the man of God had said, when the king came down to him.
17 O capitão em cujo braço o rei tinha se apoiado foi encarregado pelo rei de guardar o portão da cidade, mas o povo o atropelou junto ao portão e ele morreu, como o homem de Deus tinha dito quando o rei foi falar com ele.
18 And it came to pass according to the word of the man of God, which he spoke to the king, when he said: Two bushels of barley shall be for a stater, and a bushel of fine flour for a stater, at this very time to morrow in the gate of Samaria.
18 Assim se cumpriu o que o homem de Deus tinha falado ao rei: “Amanhã, a estas horas mais ou menos, junto ao portão de Samaria, duas medidas de cevada serão vendidas por uma moeda de prata, e uma medida da melhor farinha será vendida por uma moeda de prata.”
19 When that lord answered the mall of' God, and said: Although the Lord should make flood-gates in heaven, could this come to pass which thou sayest? And he said to him: Thou shalt see with thy eyes, and shalt not eat thereof.
19 Aquele capitão havia respondido ao homem de Deus: “Mesmo que o Senhor Deus fizesse janelas no céu, será que isso poderia acontecer, segundo essa palavra?” Ao que o profeta havia respondido: “Eis que você verá isso com os seus próprios olhos, mas não comerá disso.”
20 And so it fell out to him as it was foretold, and the people trod upon him in the gate, and he died.
20 E assim aconteceu com ele, porque o povo o atropelou junto ao portão, e ele morreu.
