1 I said in my heart, I will give you joy for a test; so take your pleasure--but it was to no purpose.
1 Pensei comigo mesmo: Vamos. Vou experimentar a alegria. Descubra as coisas boas da vida! Mas isso também se revelou inútil.
2 Of laughing I said, It is foolish; and of joy--What use is it?
2 Concluí que o rir é loucura, e a alegria de nada vale.
3 I made a search with my heart to give pleasure to my flesh with wine, still guiding my heart with wisdom, and to go after foolish things, so that I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under the heavens all the days of their life.
3 Decidi-me entregar ao vinho e à extravagância; mantendo, porém, a mente orientada pela sabedoria. Eu queria saber o que valesse a pena, debaixo do céu, nos poucos dias da vida humana.
4 I undertook great works, building myself houses and planting vine-gardens.
4 Lancei-me a grandes projetos: construí casas e plantei vinhas para mim.
5 I made myself gardens and fruit gardens, planting in them fruit-trees of all sorts.
5 Fiz jardins e pomares, e neles plantei todo tipo de árvore frutífera.
6 I made pools to give water for the woods with their young trees.
6 Construí também reservatórios para regar os meus bosques verdejantes.
7 I got men-servants and women-servants, and they gave birth to sons and daughters in my house. I had great wealth of herds and flocks, more than all who were in Jerusalem before me.
7 Comprei escravos e escravas e tive escravos que nasceram em minha casa. Além disso tive também mais bois e ovelhas do que todos os que viveram antes de mim em Jerusalém.
8 I got together silver and gold and the wealth of kings and of countries. I got makers of song, male and female; and the delights of the sons of men--girls of all sorts to be my brides.
8 Ajuntei para mim prata e ouro, tesouros de reis e de províncias. Servi-me de cantores e cantoras, e também de um harém, as delícias do homem.
9 And I became great; increasing more than all who had been before me in Jerusalem, and my wisdom was still with me.
9 Tornei-me mais famoso e poderoso do que todos os que viveram em Jerusalém antes de mim, conservando comigo a minha sabedoria.
10 And nothing which was desired by my eyes did I keep from them; I did not keep any joy from my heart, because my heart took pleasure in all my work, and this was my reward.
10 Não me neguei nada que os meus olhos desejaram; não me recusei a dar prazer algum ao meu coração. Na verdade, eu me alegrei em todo o meu trabalho; essa foi a recompensa de todo o meu esforço.
11 Then I saw all the works which my hands had made, and everything I had been working to do; and I saw that all was to no purpose and desire for wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
11 Contudo, quando avaliei tudo o que as minhas mãos haviam feito e o trabalho que eu tanto me esforçara para realizar, percebi que tudo foi inútil, foi correr atrás do vento; não há qualquer proveito no que se faz debaixo do sol.
12 And I went again in search of wisdom and of foolish ways. What may the man do who comes after the king? The thing which he has done before.
12 Então passei a refletir na sabedoria, na loucura e na insensatez. O que pode fazer o sucessor do rei a não ser repetir o que já foi feito?
13 Then I saw that wisdom is better than foolish ways--as the light is better than the dark.
13 Percebi que a sabedoria é melhor que a insensatez, assim como a luz é melhor do que as trevas.
14 The wise man's eyes are in his head, but the foolish man goes walking in the dark; but still I saw that the same event comes to them all.
14 O homem sábio tem olhos que enxergam, mas o tolo anda nas trevas; todavia, percebi que ambos têm o mesmo destino.
15 Then said I in my heart: As it comes to the foolish man, so will it come to me; so why have I been wise overmuch? Then I said in my heart: This again is to no purpose.
15 Então pensei comigo mesmo: O que acontece ao tolo também me acontecerá. Que proveito eu tive em ser sábio? Então eu disse no meu íntimo: Isso não faz o menor sentido!
16 Of the wise man, as of the foolish man, there is no memory for ever, seeing that those who now are will have gone from memory in the days to come. See how death comes to the wise as to the foolish!
16 Nem o sábio, nem o tolo, serão lembrados para sempre; nos dias futuros ambos serão esquecidos. Como pode o sábio morrer como morre o tolo?
17 So I was hating life, because everything under the sun was evil to me: all is to no purpose and desire for wind.
17 Por isso desprezei a vida, pois o trabalho que se faz debaixo do sol pareceu-me muito pesado. Tudo era inútil, era correr atrás do vento.
18 Hate had I for all my work which I had done, because the man who comes after me will have its fruits.
18 Desprezei todas as coisas pelas quais eu tanto me esforçara debaixo do sol, pois terei que deixá-las para aquele que me suceder.
19 And who is to say if that man will be wise or foolish? But he will have power over all my work which I have done and in which I have been wise under the sun. This again is to no purpose.
19 E quem pode dizer se ele será sábio ou tolo? Contudo, terá domínio sobre tudo o que realizei com o meu trabalho e com a minha sabedoria debaixo do sol. Isso também não faz sentido.
20 So my mind was turned to grief for all the trouble I had taken and all my wisdom under the sun.
20 Cheguei ao ponto de me desesperar por causa de todo o trabalho em que tanto me esforcei debaixo do sol.
21 Because there is a man whose work has been done with wisdom, with knowledge, and with an expert hand; but one who has done nothing for it will have it for his heritage. This again is to no purpose and a great evil.
21 Pois um homem pode realizar o seu trabalho com sabedoria, conhecimento e habilidade, mas terá que deixar tudo o que possui como herança para alguém que não se esforçou por aquilo. Isso também é um absurdo e uma grande injustiça.
22 What does a man get for all his work, and for the weight of care with which he has done his work under the sun?
22 Que proveito tem um homem de todo o esforço e de toda a ansiedade com que trabalha debaixo do sol?
23 All his days are sorrow, and his work is full of grief. Even in the night his heart has no rest. This again is to no purpose.
23 Durante toda a sua vida, seu trabalho não passa de dor e tristeza; mesmo à noite a sua mente não descansa. Isso também é absurdo.
24 There is nothing better for a man than taking meat and drink, and having delight in his work. This again I saw was from the hand of God.
24 Para o homem não existe nada melhor do que comer, beber e encontrar prazer em seu trabalho. E vi que isso também vem da mão de Deus.
25 Who may take food or have pleasure without him?
25 E quem aproveitou melhor as comidas e os prazeres do que eu?
26 To the man with whom he is pleased, God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the work of getting goods together and storing up wealth, to give to him in whom God has pleasure. This again is to no purpose and desire for wind.
26 Ao homem que o agrada, Deus recompensa com sabedoria, conhecimento e felicidade. Quanto ao pecador, Deus o encarrega de ajuntar e armazenar riquezas para entregá-las a quem o agrada. Isso também é inútil, é correr atrás do vento.
