1 Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and rapine. The prey departs not.
1 Que aflição espera Nínive, cidade de homicídio e mentiras! É cheia de riquezas tomadas à força, e nunca lhe faltam vítimas.
2 The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of wheels, and prancing horses, and bounding chariots,
2 Ouçam o estalo de chicotes, o estrondo de rodas! Os cavalos vêm galopando, e os carros de guerra sacodem sem parar.
3 the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies. They stumble upon their bodies,
3 Vejam as espadas faiscantes e as lanças reluzentes quando passa a cavalaria! Há incontáveis mortos, montes de cadáveres. Os corpos são tantos que os vivos neles tropeçam.
4 because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, who sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.
4 Tudo isso porque Nínive, prostituta bela, dona de encantamentos mortais, seduziu as nações com sua beleza. Ensinou a elas sua magia e enfeitiçou gente de toda parte.
5 Behold, I am against thee, says LORD of hosts, and I will uncover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will show the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.
5 “Sou seu inimigo!”, diz o S “Agora levantarei suas vestes e mostrarei às nações sua nudez e vergonha.
6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazing-stock.
6 Cobrirei você de sujeira e mostrarei ao mundo como é desprezível.
7 And it shall come to pass, that all those who look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste. Who will bemoan her? From where shall I seek comforters for thee?
7 Todos que a virem se afastarão e dirão: ‘Nínive está arruinada! Onde estão os que choram por ela?’. Alguém lamentará sua destruição?”
8 Are thou better than No-amon, that was situated among the rivers, that had the waters round about her, whose rampart was the sea, [and] her wall was of the sea?
8 Acaso você é melhor que a cidade de Tebas, situada junto ao rio Nilo e cercada de água? Por todos os lados era protegida pelo rio, e as águas eram seus muros.
9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite. Put and Lubim were thy helpers.
9 A Etiópia e a terra do Egito lhe davam apoio ilimitado. A naçõe de Pute e a Líbia estavam entre seus aliados.
10 Yet she was carried away. She went into captivity. Her young sons also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets. And they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.
10 E, no entanto, Tebas foi conquistada, e seus habitantes, levados como escravos. Seus bebês foram lançados com violência contra as pedras nas ruas. Soldados tiraram sortes para decidir quem levaria oficiais egípcios como servos; todos os seus líderes foram acorrentados.
11 Thou also shall be drunken. Thou shall be hid. Thou also shall seek a stronghold because of the enemy.
11 E você, Nínive, também tropeçará como um bêbado e se esconderá de medo do inimigo que ataca.
12 All thy fortresses shall be [like] fig trees with the first ripe figs. If they be shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater.
12 Todas as suas fortalezas cairão; serão devoradas como figos maduros que caem na boca de quem sacode a árvore.
13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women. The gates of thy land are set wide open to thine enemies. The fire has devoured thy bars.
13 Seus soldados ficarão fracos e indefesos como mulheres. Os portões de sua terra serão escancarados para o inimigo, e fogo consumirá as trancas.
14 Draw thee water for the siege. Strengthen thy fortresses. Go into the clay, and tread the mortar. Make strong the brick kiln.
14 Prepare-se para o cerco! Estoque água! Reforce suas defesas! Entre nos buracos para pisar o barro, coloque-o nas formas e faça tijolos para reparar os muros!
15 There the fire shall devour thee. The sword shall cut thee off. It shall devour thee like the canker-worm. Make thyself many as the canker-worm. Make thyself many as the locust.
15 Mesmo assim, o fogo a devorará; a espada a exterminará. O inimigo a consumirá como gafanhotos que devoram tudo pela frente. Mesmo que você se multiplique como gafanhotos, não haverá como escapar.
16 Thou have multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven. The canker-worm ravages, and flees away.
16 Seus comerciantes se tornaram mais numerosos que as estrelas do céu. Mas, como nuvem de gafanhotos, devastam a terra e voam para longe.
17 Thy rulers are as the locusts, and thy marshals as the swarms of grasshoppers, which encamp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun arises they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.
17 Seus guardas e oficiais também são como gafanhotos, que se ajuntam sobre os muros nos dias frios. Mas, como gafanhotos que voam embora quando o sol aparece, todos vão para longe e desaparecem.
18 Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria. Thy nobles are at rest. Thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is none to gather them.
18 Seus líderes dormem, ó rei assírio; seus nobres estão mortos, estendidos no pó. Seu povo está espalhado pelos montes, e não há quem os reúna.
19 There is no assuaging of thy hurt. Thy wound is grievous. All who hear the report of thee clap their hands over thee, for upon whom has not thy wickedness passed continually?
19 Não há cura para sua ferida; ela é mortal. Todos que ouvirem sobre sua destruição baterão palmas de alegria. Onde se poderá encontrar alguém que não sofreu com sua constante crueldade?
